The Longford Ploughing Championship
This was held in March 2006 and was a nice day out. They had it arranged over two or three large fields and you could do a nice walk around the perimeter and get to see everything. The old tractors and horse ploughing held the most interest for me, but they also had more modern equipment and loy digging. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of the digging.
Getting Off |
We're off again |
Concentration |
Look Out! |
There seemed to be an inordinate amount of climbing off tractors and measuring up. |
This guy seems to be off again |
Deep in concentration for that perfect straight furrow |
If these guys don't pay attention to where they're going, somebody is going to get hurt. |
He's Done |
Has he seen me? |
Willing Helpers |
Is it fixed yet? |
Either that or he just fancies a drive around for a break |
I think I had better get out of the way |
This driver didn't seem to be short of help when she experience some problems |
They'll get it going eventually |
Heavy Horses |
After Turning |
Making Progress |
Holding the Line |
This guy was pretty good. |
This was fascinating to watch and wonderful to still see the old traditions kept alive |
This was actually amazingly fast. You could see that this team would get a lot of work done |
Again, you can see the concentration involved here. |

The other way |
Another Team |
A bit Modern |
|
The same guy but going the other direction |
These horses were a lot smaller but perhaps better matched |
Not exactly what held my interest but this is why most people come. |
